Messing with electrical appliances and components is serious business. Hello, my name is George Tanner. I’m a retired electrician. I can’t even begin to tell you how many horror stories I heard over the years of working as an electrician. People who thought they could quickly fix something in their homes but never should have even tried. Some got hurt and others were lucky. My goal here is to provide you with some guidelines as to what electrical malfunctions are easily fixable by nearly any adult, and what you should never attempt on your own. One thing you are going to hear me stress more than once is that electrical components are not to be taken lightly. We protect our children from them; we also have to protect ourselves. I hope you find this blog to be helpful!
Your electric panel is used to control the electricity throughout your entire home, so it's obviously a very important component of your wiring system. If you're like many homeowners, however, you might not pay much attention to your electric panel or whether or not it is in good condition.
What you should know is that an older electric panel that is in need of an upgrade can pose a serious threat to you, your family members and your home. Failing to upgrade your panel as necessary can be very dangerous, so it's important to learn the signs that it's time for a new panel. These are a few of the main things you should look for; if you notice any of them, then you should call an electrician as soon as possible.
1. Breakers are Constantly Tripping
It isn't necessarily a bad sign if a breaker in your home trips every now and then, but if you find that this is more than a once-in-a-while type of thing, then it's probably because your wiring system cannot handle all of the power that is being used in your home. Next time that you have to flip a breaker, it's a good idea to pick up the phone and call an electrician to come out and look at your panel box.
2. You Notice Sounds Coming From Your Breaker Box
If you notice strange sounds coming from your breaker box -- such as crackling sounds -- then there is probably a major problem. These issues should never be DIY projects and should be tended to as quickly as possible. These sounds could be a sign of a potential electrical fire that is just waiting to happen.
3. Your Appliances Aren't Working Properly
A faulty breaker box or wiring system can cause your appliances not to work correctly. For example, you might not be able to operate them on full power, or you might have to discontinue use of one appliance in order to use another. This is never a good sign and shows that your home needs major electrical work -- including a panel upgrade -- to keep up with today's modern-day appliances and electronics.
Electric panels are an important part of any home wiring system. If you notice any of these three problems, it is critical to talk to an electrician about an upgrade. Otherwise, your home could be at risk of an electrical fire or other serious issue. To learn more, contact an electrician at Chadwick Electric Services.Share
